Visiting Chiang Mai wouldn't be complete without a journey to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, often deemed the most significant temple in the city by locals.
Constructed in the early 19th Buddhist century, the allure of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is enhanced by a series of seven-headed serpent statues adorning the staircase leading to the temple. At the summit awaits a magnificent Chiang Saen-style golden pagoda surrounded by exquisite Lanna architecture. The panoramic view of Chiang Mai from this vantage point is nothing short of phenomenal.
The temple also hosts the Tiaw Khuen Doi Festival, a remarkable event involving a pilgrimage up Doi Suthep Hill to pay homage to the enshrined Buddhist relics. This festival offers a unique and enriching experience for visitors.
Situated in Tambon Suthep, Amphoe Mueang, Chiang Mai Province, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is positioned 11 kilometers away from the city center. Accessing the temple is convenient by car, following the Huai Kaew-Chiang Mai University-Chiang Mai Zoo road with clear signposts leading to the temple. Additionally, small buses are available from Chiang Mai University between 5:00 am and 5:00 pm.
There are two delightful ways to reach Phra That Doi Suthep Temple:
1. Ascend the seven-headed serpent stairs, providing not only access but also an excellent opportunity for capturing memorable photographs.
2. Utilize the electric tram, operational from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, with a nominal fee of 20 THB for Thais and 50 THB for foreigners.
