Koh Ker is an ancient temple site located in the northern part of Cambodia, approximately 120 kilometers away from Siem Reap. It was once the capital of the Khmer Empire during the 10th century, under the reign of King Jayavarman IV.
History:
Koh Ker was established as the capital city in 928 AD and remained so for about 20 years. It was a prosperous and important center of the Khmer Empire, with over 180 sanctuaries and temples spread across an area of about 81 square kilometers. However, after the capital was relocated back to Angkor, Koh Ker was largely abandoned and fell into ruin. It was rediscovered in the late 19th century and has since been undergoing restoration efforts.
Attractions:
The main attraction at Koh Ker is the Prasat Thom, a seven-tiered pyramid temple that stands at around 36 meters tall. Visitors can climb to the top of the pyramid and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding jungle. Another significant temple is Prasat Pram, which is known for its intricate carvings and unique architecture. Other notable temples include Prasat Thom Pram, Prasat Krachap, and Prasat Linga.
