Byōdō-in

Byōdō-in is a Buddhist temple located in the city of Uji, just south of Kyoto, Japan. It is one of the most iconic and well-preserved examples of Buddhist architecture from the Heian period (794-1185).

History:
Byōdō-in was originally built in 998 as a rural villa for a powerful politician named Fujiwara no Michinaga. After his death, his son converted the villa into a temple in 1052. The temple's main hall, called the Phoenix Hall (Hō-ō-dō), is the most famous and recognizable structure of Byōdō-in. Its unique design, resembling a mythical Chinese phoenix spreading its wings, has made it an architectural masterpiece.

The interior of the Phoenix Hall houses a statue of Amida Buddha, a central figure in Pure Land Buddhism. The hall is surrounded by beautiful gardens and a large pond, creating a tranquil and picturesque setting.
